"A Magical Evening" Returns!

September 24th at 7PM at the Pell City CEPA building, I will be returning for the third annual "A Magical Evening" show. It's a great local show showcasing several magicians from the Magic City Magic Club in Birmingham.
As with previous years, it will be an all-new show. Each magician is challenged to come up with new material so the audience experiences something fresh every year.
That's the fun part for magicians. You see, we all gravitate toward "favorite effects" in our lives. It might be something we've done for years and are super smooth at when performing. The problem comes from the fact that we can be trapped and stagnate in our magic.
Recently I went to Vegas for the "Magic Live" convention and saw a lot of magicians perform. Some were astonishing and others were merely amusing. But one magician in particular truly disappointed my wife and I more than any other. He has been performing for decades, but it was obvious in the show he has fallen out of love with magic. He was going through the motions, halfheartedly saying his lines, and almost expressionless. Here he was, amazing the audience with some great illusions, and he seemed like he wanted to be anywhere else but there.
To be fair, he was performing some of the same illusions I had seen him perform twenty years ago. It's easy to get bored when you reach a point in magic where you stop learning and just coast.
And that's the purpose of the show. This year, some of us will actually be swapping some effects--a couple of them actually signature effects for that particular magician. Why would we do that? To give a fresh face to the illusions. Even if it's something you've seen before, seeing it through the fresh eyes of a magician performing it new rather than routine will hopefully be amazing.
If you are in the area, make plans to join us. Tickets are available at http://www.PellCityCenter.com or at the door. VIP tickets are available as well with a special pre-show.
